About Costa De La Luz | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
Situated on the western part of the Andalucian coastline that faces out to the Atlantic, the Costa de la Luz derives its name from the intense bright light that reflects its clear blue sea, pretty whitewashed villages and golden sandy beaches. Click here to view Multimap Map This part of the coast is still un-developed, unlike the Costa de la Sol, and boasts mild temperatures even in the hottest summer months, due to the Atlantic winds, making this area a haven for windsurfers, surf and kite boarders. The clean, golden sandy beaches are backed by pine forests and sand dunes, whilst inland, rolling green fields, vinyards and cattle farms add to the sense of peace and tranquillity. The coastline is dotted with small fishing villages, Zahara de los Atunes being one of the most well known due to its thriving tuna fishing industry; Conil de la Frontera with its endless stretch of white sandy beach and lovely old town of twisting cobbled streets lined with good tapas bars and fish restaurants. Tarifa – the southernmost tip of Europe where the Mediterranean and the Atlantic meet is a charming old town with a castle dating back to the 10th Century, and is the windsurfing and kite surfing capital of the world. Biking, climbing, horse riding, diving, golf, fishing, hiking and tennis are all available here.
Set just back from the coast, perched on a hilltop is the white fortified town of Vejer, well worth a visit to wander through the narrow cobbled streets and dine at one of the many good restaurants surrounding the towns pretty bougainvillea-glad plaza. A little further along the coast Sanlucar de Barrameda is an attractive small town with pretty squares and streets to explore, sandy beaches and is the centre of manzanilla production, a delicious wine very similar to fino sherry but lighter and fresher in taste – the perfect accompaniment to the local seafood specialities, delicious sweet prawns being the most popular. Just inland is the city of Jerez de la Frontera which is famous for its Andalucian school of dancing horses, its flamenco and of course its sherry and brandy production. (Airport)
